Eight Basic Facts of the Ombudsman

  1. We make our decisions independently of all government departments/entities, ministers or politicians.
  2. We are open, impartial and transparent and examine complaints without taking sides.
  3. The Ombudsman’s appointment is confirmed by Parliament.
  4. We have the same authority as the Courts to obtain information and documents.
  5. We are committed to promote awareness and improvement in the public services.
  6. Our services are free.
  7. We are committed to providing a fair service to all members of the public.
  8. When we find that a government department or entity has done something wrong, we may recommend how it should put it right. Although we cannot make the relevant entity do what we recommend, they are almost always willing to act on what we say.
